To get their work done quickly and successfully, federal employees are turning to mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets. In the process, they are blurring the line between work and personal usage -- and creating major security holes that govern- ment information technol- ogy departments must plug amid evolving technology and lagging policy, said Jack Golden, director of the Secure Mobility and Special Communications Group at AT&T Government Solu- tions, during a March 12 webcast titled "Methods and Insights into Managing Mobile Securely." "People are taking advan- tage of the tools at hand to do what they need to do in the most ef cient and effective means pos- sible, and more and more that s an application on an untethered mobile device," Golden said. "Work usage vs. personal usage is really starting to become more a matter of context rather than the actual tools being used." And like most mobile-device users, feds want their devices to do more than just make phone calls or send text mes- sages. The ability to e-mail, browse the web and do everyday computing tasks are fast becoming required functions. Al- though some data tools and sources will always be speci c to work, particularly in the government arena, Golden said, many applications overlap work and recreation, such as web sur ng, doing a search, e- learning or using social media. al workforce ut before federal IT managers can begin securing their mobile forces, they need to understand how prevalent mo- bile devices are and how they are being used. A study by Federal Computer Week and Beacon Technology Partners in January and February found that 41 percent of federal employees use mo- bile devices for work, most commonly smart phones (92 percent), notebook computers (66 percent), and tablets and Apple Inc. iPads (63 percent). Almost 90 percent of feds use Research in Motion BlackBerry s operating system, while nearly half use Apple iOS and 41 percent use Android.
