Q What is missing in business intelligence (BI) systems? Most of the data you work with in a BI system --- or any enterprise busi- ness system --- contains data with a location component. Traditional analytic systems, however, can t unlock this geographic context, so you are not getting a complete pic- ture. Incorporating mapping and location information within your traditional analytics enables you to more e ectively answer questions than by using only tables and charts. Where is my population at risk? Which infrastructure project will have the most impact on the regional population? How can I under- stand the economic and sociological e ects of weather and natural disasters? Location analytics unlocks the geographic attributes of mission-critical information. Q Does the introduction of location analytics mean replacing existing business systems? Absolutely not. Location analytic capabilities are designed to complement the existing information systems like BI and CRM. In fact, agencies and departments that are deploying lo- cation analytics in a strategic fashion are leveraging spatial ca- pabilities --- mapping, analytics, and data enrichment --- that enhance the existing analytic infrastructure. Business users are able to work with --- and take advantage of --- location data within their familiar environments and work ows. ere is no disruption to process or work ow. Regardless of the business system, adding a map is now as easy as adding a chart. Q How does location analytics t in place-based decision-making? Governments are nding that place-based policy works. Look- ing at the data coming in from business intelligence systems and understanding their impacts nationally, regionally, or by neigh- borhood enables agencies to better apportion precious resourc- es. For example, knowing and communicating where stimulus funds are being spent --- with respect to factors such as dem- onstrated need by neighborhood, demographics, and available resources --- can improve transparency and accountability. Mak- ing decisions on where to locate government o ces or services by rst looking at the inventory of available government-owned property near the need can greatly reduce costs and better use existing resources. Bottom-line business decisions supported by location analytics improves overall government e ciency. Q What are some of the bene ts of location-enabled business intelligence? A e prevalence of geography in our everyday lives --- including GPS and maps at our ngertips --- changes the expectations of information within the enterprise, both commercial and public. People expect to see mission-critical information visually on a map. A map, however, is more than a pretty picture. A map presents information in ways that drive understanding and better decision-making. Across the public sector, agencies manage and invest funds in an e ort to improve human outcomes --- such as increasing safety, reducing crime, identifying populations at risk, optimizing infrastructure investment, and so on. ese are geographic and location-based problems. Location context gives us the information we need to make these decisions. Location analytics allows us to communicate the results of these decisions. It s a no-brainer. Q What s a way to begin using location analytics on a regular basis? Start simple. Many agencies start with a pilot in a single depart- ment using a common business system --- such as Microsoft O ce --- to map their data; it s as straight-forward as adding a chart. is quick, and easy step yields tremendous impact. Users can immediately spot patterns in the data using simple one-click tools, such as clustering and hotspot analysis. Users then can go a step further, sharing and communicating new insights with interactive maps in PowerPoint presenta- tions. And the bene ts only increase as users share maps via browsers and on mobile devices. ey can also share information and maps across disparate business systems, including Excel, BI, CRM, ERP, and more. Maps become the common language to drive positive outcomes in the public sector.
